MINATURES-V/A, PIPE RECORDS, LP, 1980, U.S.A

minatures

V/A- Miniatures
1980. Pipe records
A sequence of 51 tiny masterpieces edited by Morgan Fisher. Amazing collection of mostly British composers and sound explorers. Everything from abstract poetry, jazz, experimental, avant-rock and more. It's impressive to see the amount of creativity these artists back into a 1-minute (or less) piece. You can hear them having fun with the work and doing things they are not normally used to doing, full spectrum of composition, sound and explorations. Each track is wonderfully commented on by label owner and project producer Morgan Fisher. Stand out tracks for us were Andy Partridge, The Work, Fred Frith (who squeezes pieces from every Henry Cow song into a power mash up piece!) Metabolist, The Residents & Mary Langford.

JON GIBSON-VISITATIONS, CPS, 1973, L.P., U.S.A

VISITATIONS

NYC, 1973. Chatham Square Productions, INC
First solo LP by this Phillip Glass part time collaborator and label mate. Beautifully done left field modern minimal classical work. A wonderful excursion in "non-monumental music". Instrumentation includes: wooden flutes, bells, cymbals, synth, brook, claves and various effects. A great example of field recordings interweaving with composed musical instruments to create sonic blanketing . Put this on in place of your morning and evening ragas for a similar effect on heads.

FRANK GARVEY-OMNICIRCUS, L.P., 1979, U.S.A

circus

Renaissance man by way of Chicago, Garvey recorded this album there which would later be the impetus for realizing the OmniCircus Robotic Theater Ensemble in San Francisco a few years later. We posted his first LP a few months back and are now pleased to bring you the other missing link from this part of his career.

Pushing sound barriers throughout most of the LP with heavy synth work and tape saturation cymbals, droning and built-up textures, not unlike many later recordings by MB and the likes. We love it for this intense exploration of the synth, he has definitely mastered his craft, containing all blasts & washes of sound collage.

Again, production here is top notch. the back reads: "This recording contains the music for the first 2 sections of "Ominicircus", a theater piece for electronic music, computer graphics, video synthesis, dance, sculpture, architecture and drama" wow!
back cover notes also elude to a 3/4" tape version as well as VHS and Beta documents. PLEASE get in touch if you have these??! Synth mad scientist excursions at their best! complete again with xeroxed/do it yourself lay out ...

Recommended!

ROBERT W. BOYD- $ 5 KEYBOARD MUSIC, CASSETTE, 1994, U.S.A.

5dollar

Im still not sure if cassette's title is meant as- "this tape is only five dollars and you get all this great keyboard music".. or if it's more of a "i made all this music using a five dollar keyboard " either works for me, the talented robert w. boyd delivers some compelling albeit odd tunes on this "keeping it weird" cassette filled with 14 interesting, cryptic and original compositions with one cover of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's flight of the bumble bee.

4 track casio muzak anyone?

favorites include brass celesta kalimba jazz, synthetic voice/electric piano melody and pan flute slow melody. sanity muffins indeed.
